About the piece

la li ley is a lively and joyful composition for 4-part treble choir. It is a nod to two Malay folksongs in different ways: the text / vocables is inspired by a portion of “Canggung” (la la li la ley), and the main theme is inspired by the opening motif of “Mak Inang”. This work features exciting vocal play merged with folkloric elements - quartal harmonies, dance-like rhythms, and shifting tonality - that are spun through a musically-contemporary lens.

This piece was commissioned by the Virginia Choral Directors Association for their 2024 Virginia All-State SSAA Choir, conducted by Pearl Shangkuan!
