This uplifting commissioned work celebrates the life-long relationships and bonds created and nurtured within the choral community, inspired by my experiences with Shallaway Youth Choir and their artistic director, Kellie Walsh. Beautifully suited as a joyous “welcome” or “parting gift” for choirs at the start / end of the season, celebrating anniversaries, graduations, or farewells, this piece honours the priceless gift of shared choral experiences.
The work features text that are intentional to Shallaway and their geographical location: “big and small” references Shallaway’s symbol of The Fishpin; “waters” and “horizon” are memorable imageries of my visit to St. John’s, Newfoundland. The verses resemble one-liners found in fortune cookies.
Look out for a tiny nod to a well-loved beautiful song from the 1800’s!
I am grateful to Shallaway Youth Choir and Kellie Walsh (Executive Artistic Director) for commissioning me to create this work. It is an honour and joy to create music for a collective of human beings I greatly admire!
